Gurgen Aloian is an illustrator who specializes in political caricature. He has a unique experience in that he immigrated first from Yerevan, Armenia to St. Petersburg, Russia as a child, and then to New York in order to attend high school. His move to the US to pursue better educational and artistic opportunities was mainly motivated by Russia’s unwelcoming attitude toward immigrants. After finishing high school, Gurgen attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, graduating with a BFA in Illustration in May 2017. He chose to pursue this degree because he believes that artists have the power, vision, and responsibility to fight against tyranny and inequality at the frontiers of culture, both at the local and global scale. Escaping Putin 2010, witnessing the rise of populism and nationalism around the globe, and now battling the era of Trump in the US, Gurgen is as passionate as ever to create art to promote progressive values.
